Steps to Proper Chewing

1. The first step in proper chewing technique, is of course reaching the legal age for using and purchasing tobacco products in your state or country. In the US, 18 is the legal age.

2. Buy your favorite pouch, plug or tin of tobacco. Don't forget, chewing tobacco is different from smokeless tobacco, snuff or others that you stick in your lip and spit products.

3. Open and smell the tobacco. If your stomach cannot handle this flavor, you may want to choose a different one, or you may not like chew in general.

4. Pull a few leaves from the plug or remove from the pouch, place them in your mouth, in the cheek. This is unlike snuff, which is placed behind the lip. Chewing tobacco is placed in the pouch of your cheek beside the molars.

5. Moving the "chaw" around, you are able to chew it, but be very careful not to swallow anything at all. When you put the chew in your mouth, your saliva glands will over produce. This is a normal reaction to the to presence of the tobacco's moistures and oils.

6. Now, you can begin lightly chewing the tobacco. Don't chew to hard and turn the leaves into bits, which will then find their way to your throat and stomach. This can make you queasy and even cause a violent eruption.

7. When it feels like you have a good amount of spit worked into your chaw, purse your lips and spit out the juice. Be careful where you spit and consider others when doing so.

8. You can keep the chew in until the flavor is gone or you cannot stand it anymore.

9. When finished, expel the chew from your mouth, rinse your mouth out with water, but do not swallow any of the remaining tobacco or juice.
